zarbrook on "Why WebDAV over FTP?"

We receive this question often, what bother changing the file protocol that most designers are used to, FTP? Why does Konductor force me to use WebDAV instead of FTP?

Well first off, WebDAV goes over HTTP (and thus port 80) and is sometimes better for getting through an aggressive corporate firewall.

But I feel that webdav.org answered it best:

------

Since DAV works over HTTP, you get all the benefits of HTTP that FTP cannot provide. For example: strong authentication, encryption, proxy support, and caching. It is true that you can get some of this through SSH, but the HTTP infrastructure is much more widely deployed than SSH. Further, SSH does not have the wide complement of tools, development libraries, and applications that HTTP does.

DAV transfers (well, HTTP transfers) are also more efficient than FTP. You can pipeline multiple transfers through a single TCP connection, whereas FTP requires a new connection for each file transferred (plus the control connection).

------

Ultimately, they both are used to provide functionality - transferring files - but WebDAV is no doubt more flexible and secure.

Hi SmartK,

Lots of questions from you, hope our answers are of some help. :)

To put your sites like you'll want to log in to your web account here: https://konductor.net/login.

Once you're in, find the site you want to put live under the main 'Sites' tab and click 'Go Live'. From here you'll be walked through a simple stepped process for getting it live on your domain.

Let me know if you need some help with those steps.

Hi SmartK,

If you have a few sites that you've created on our system please make sure that you aren't logging in to one that has already been deleted. Also, make sure that you've uploaded your templates as DWT files with a ".dwt" file extension. If you still have trouble please get in touch through a support request and we can look into your account specifically.

When you first create a site, you will get an email with the details of your site. Perhaps check your spam filter for this email as it would be been sent immediately after you created the site.

I believe that most issues people are having with the menus will be resolved in the 2.5 release. Since "Class" and "ID" are editable on a per LI/UL basis in 2.5 it should cover most of these issues. If you are interested in trying a pre-release 2.5 email support@konductor.net

Hi Krista,

For sure you'll be able to use your own domain for any site you've built on Konductor. Those subdomains that you get are only used while the site is in development so you and your clients can see it on the web during this time. When the site is ready to be fully live you'll have the opportunity to assign any domain you want to it.

I'm assuming that you're able to get past logging in. You don't appear to have any sites that have any pages created yet, only templates uploaded so far, so you're on the right track. Usually this error is caused by a weak on nonexistent internet connection.

Hi filigree,

Since this will help others with the same questions here is my reply to your support request and email regarding the same questions:

The content of each site is site specific, meaning you cannot automatically copy the content that has been added to the templates to another site. You of course could copy the templates on the Dreamweaver side and then use those for another site.

Konductor pages are obviously delivered to the browser through HTTP, so all you need to do from there to back them up in full is save these pages from that browser. Currently Konductor doesn't have an internal versioning system though.

Hopefully that helps. :)

Hi Bonucci,

First, make sure that you've got the correct extension from here: http://www.konductor.net/exchange.htm

Also, make sure that you're installing it through the CS5 version of the Abode Extension Manager if you're running Dreamweaver CS5. Sometimes a CS4 version will install the extension and you won't be able to use it then.

This video will show you how it should work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-rUA9n-5hk

The Konductor extension should be setting up your connection info for you when you create the site locally through it. Just to be sure, you would want to do that as in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KHH0XQVQFk

Once you've created the site through the extension, your remote info screen should have the following information: test=your site's name, Login=your designer username, password=your designer password.

Hope that helps.

Good questions!

1. You're exactly right as to how the divs work. You set the divs you want to be editable in Dw and then upload those templates. Those divs are then editable by your client within the Konductor application that they download.

2. Konductor works through an extension for Dreamweaver that sets up all the information that you'll need for you site both locally and on our servers. It doesn't mess with the code that you create, rather it takes care of the administrative tasks involved with setting up a site; essentially making your life easier.

I think you'll find our tutorial videos very helpful with this as well. Here's the playlist for designer tutorials: http://www.youtube.com/konductorsoftware#p/c/5DBC88856201EB8F

You'll find videos in there for both installing the extension and how to define divs as editable.

Hope the helps. :)

Cameron Fisk on "Questions about the CMS and adding modules"

Hi Greggy,

1. Konductor offers the ability to manage and edit the main features that most people want and need in a site that involves the main HTML of a site. By this I mean we offer full content, page, image, form and menu management, but we leave the other "modules or components" up to you.

With Konductor we wanted to do one thing right - content management, and then allow you to add anything you want on top of that. Because of the way the web works now, we decided to leave things like image galleries, videos, and online stores, etc., to services that already do an awesome job at them (like Flickr, YouTube, or in the case of online stores, ProStores, Yahoo Small Business or Amazon Stores). We would not be able to do nearly as good of a job with those types of services without distracting ourselves from offering an extremely useable CMS, so we let you use whatever you want with us! If it works in an HTML page it will work with Konductor.

We have also been working on some documentation on integration with these services (we have a Flickr one ready to snap in here - http://help.konductor.net/extension/en_US/1.0/image-galleries-with-flickr.html). This model allows you to have access to the best services without having to do a bunch of extra coding.

2. I think the previous answer may have answered this as well, but just so you know, we also have a fully documented REST API that you can tie into with other services if you like.

To develop your site, you'll only need to use the code that's included and referenced in a Dreamweaver template; typically not much more than HTML and CSS.

3. For editing a Konductor site, the user will get to use a free desktop application. The reason for this is that we would not be able offer certain features as easily, such as true WYSIWYG editing and image editing, if it was solely browser based. As I mentioned earlier, full page management is available, including editing, creating and deleting.

Hopefully that answered some of your questions.

To delete a site you'll want to do it through the Dreamweaver extension. In Dreamweaver go to Site > Manage Konductor Sites... then log in with your designer username and password. From your list of sites that will appear you can select one and then in the properties panel at the bottom of that window you can choose 'Delete Site...'

Hello,
I am building a news site in using Dreamweaver CS5.
I want to place 2 divs as a news blog and a video blog.
By using Konductor can I do this and then have my client edit those herself?
Also how does it work? Do I install a plugin and then upload to your host?

Thanks,
Rick

I have a couple of questions for you:

1. Does your CMS contain any Modules or Components or program such as Gallery, News,
Calender, Forum and etc.?

2. Can I add modules myself to my site?

3. Is Konductor service an on-line content editor or it is available to create, edit and delete pages by site admin?

Thanks,

I'm having the same javascript problem currently, and trying to iron out whether there is an issue with specific javascript (spry or jquery) or javascript in general.

As far as your nav dropping the styling as well as the actual text, my experience is that if you have your
unordered list enclosed in a div with a class slector (div class="mySelector", for example), that Konductor will assign an id to the div and dump the class styling, leaving an empty class tag (eg, div id="sideMenu" class=""). When this occurred, I simply retyped my original class name into the empty class selector, and it immediately linked back up to my stylesheet. Quirky, but it worked.

ALSO: has anyone had the experience that when you define multiple navigation itemes that are styled differently, that once uploaded to Konductor, that your pages ignore the styling of one menu set and pick up another menu styling instead? I'd love to know that the problem is me.

Hi Chris,

Most likely there was a connection lag at the time in which you were trying to connect. I have just tested your connection settings and it appears to be working correctly. You'll want to give it a try again now.

Also, make sure that your designer username and password are correct as well.

It appears that you've also put in a support request for this same issue so I've replied with more specific information there as well.

Hi jcary,

To recover your credentials, you can enter your email address on one of the following pages. Both can be found by clicking the "Can't access your account?" link on the login page.

Designer credential recovery: http://konductor.net/designer/remind_password
Client credential recovery: http://konductor.net/client/remind_password

Hope that helps. :)

I cannot get my username and password. Site only allows me to put in a username to find my password, but I need both. When I try to register it says this email is already registered, but no where can I find a place to just put in my email and get both username and password.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the good questions.

1. Yes, you can do this but there are a few ways to - and if you refer to #4 of the list below it will expand a bit on additional functionality beyond CMS only. In short, yes, the long answer depends on what you want to do with them once logged in.

2. Yes, see 'Creating forms': http://help.konductor.net/application/en_US/1.0/creating-forms.html?2.5

3. Currently every editor has access, through the Konductor application, to all regions that are defined as editable by the designer. You can define roles as well with privileges.

4. With Konductor we wanted to do one thing right - basic content management, and then allow you to add anything you want on top of that. Because of the way the web works now, we decided to leave things like image galleries, videos, and online stores, etc., to the services that already do an awesome job at them (like Flickr, YouTube, or in the case of online stores, ProStores, Yahoo Small Business or Amazon Stores), and then let you include their code in your templates on Konductor. We would not be able to do nearly as good of a job with those types of services without distracting ourselves from offering an extremely useable CMS, so we let you use whatever you want with us!

We have been working on some documentation for integrating with these services; we have a Flickr one ready to snap in here - http://help.konductor.net/extension/en_US/1.0/image-galleries-with-flickr.html. This allows you to have access to the best services without having to do a bunch of extra coding.

5 (I added the 5). No, Konductor doesn't change any of the styles that you associate; it will inherit any CSS that you define and reference well. For a nice example of good practice with CSS and how Konductor can best work with it, see the included template when you create an example site within Dreamweaver (Site > New Konductor Site > Example Site...). I think what might be happening, is that you are choosing "horizontal" or "vertical" predefined menus in the Konductor Dreamweaver Extension and that if you already have your CSS defined, you should be using the "custom" option.

I hope that answers your questions. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with or if you need some more technical answers. :)

I am interested in using the Konductor app to develop a CMS site for a client.

Can a Konductor site support:

1) User Registration and password/log-in for clients and guest?
2) Database support for collecting data and sending on to clients via e-mail?
3) Multi-Level Access to site for Administrators/Clients for CMS?
4) Use of 3rd Party Shopping Cart and other tools such as offered by Super Suite™ by WebAssist?

Also, with what I have tested so far, does the menu builder override the styles associated in my templates CSS sheet?
None on the CSS styles seem to show up for the content area as well.

Thank you for your help.
